Names of Insurance Carriers and Their Elective-Abortion Coverage:

1.   CareFirst BlueChoice - HMO/POS (7): All plans cover elective abortion (2021 plan documents).

2.   CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield - PPO (3): All plans cover elective abortion (2021 plan documents). 

3.   Kaiser Permanente (11): All plans cover elective abortion (2021 plan documents).

4.   *United Healthcare (9): No plans cover elective abortion (2021 plan documents).


Summary:  There are 30 plans being offered by three insurance carriers for 2021 on the exchange.

In 2021, 70% of the plans on the Maryland exchange cover elective abortion. United Healthcare joined the exchange for 2021, offering plans that exclude elective abortion coverage  -- discontinuing the trend over the past several years of 100% of plans covering elective aborton in the Maryland exchange.

In 2020, 2019, and 2018, 100% of the plans covered elective abortions. 

In 2017, 91% of plans on the Maryland exchange covered elective abortion. In 2016, 49% of plans covered elective abortion.
