Summary: There are a total of 11 individual plans offered by 2 insurance carriers on the Alaska exchange for 2022. This is an increase of 2 plans from 2021.
In 2022, 100% of Individual and Family plans on the Alaska exchange cover elective abortion, continuing the trend from 2021, 2020, 2019, and 2018. For 2022, all of Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC) documents continue to be in compliance with regulations requiring that abortion coverage be clearly stated.
In 2020, the Premera Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC) plan documents were not in compliance with the regulations mentioned above. However, our team was able to locate the 2020 Benefit Booklets for the 9 plans being offered on the Premera website, which describe the abortion coverage as: “Covered services include, but are not limited to… Abortions, elective and medically necessary.”
In 2018 and 2019 Alaska offered 5 plans through 1 carrier on the exchange, all of which covered elective abortion.
Because Alaska was no longer a part of the Multi-State Plan (MSP) Program in 2017, there were no Multi-State-Plans, which previously excluded elective abortion from exchange plans. In 2016, 76% of plans covered elective abortion (only the Multi-State Plans excluded it).
